"The professorship is something to which some of us are called by God---in the classic sense of Luther and Calvin, such that if we do not do it, we would be acting disobediently."

Very interesting... I'm actually in the position of wondering if that might apply to me. Incidentally, one of my top choices of philosophy doctoral programs is Virginia, where Wolterstorff is presently a visiting scholar.

Where was the quote from?

It comes from "The Professorship as a Legitimate Calling" by Wolterstorff, and I lifted it from James W. Sire's book "Habits of the Mind: Intellectual Life as Christian Calling."

I should say, by way of disclaimer, that I didn't intend to put myself on par with Wolterstorff by adding this quotation to my blog. I likely have a much humbler calling.

Anyway, you'd do well to work under Wolterstorff, although I'm not sure how much he's teaching anymore.

Have you read his book "Art in Action"? Good stuff. And I hear that the companion "Worlds and Works of Art" is a more professional philosopher's version of the same book.

This is how I feel about my call to be a pastor, unfortunately.

If only one didn't worry so much about being disobedient!
